People often ask me whether artificial intelligence is going to steal their jobs.

My honest answer is that AI will eliminate some positions. Any technology capable of performing useful work faster and less expensively will eventually reduce the need for certain tasks and, in some cases, the people who performed them.

However, job elimination is only part of the story.

The broader effect of AI will be changing the jobs people perform, the skills employers value, and the way nearly every organization gets its work done.

We Have Been Through This Before

This is not the first time technology has disrupted the workforce.

Cars displaced many people whose livelihoods depended on horses, but they also created automobile factories, repair shops, gas stations, dealerships, insurance companies, trucking businesses, road construction projects, and entire supporting industries.

Electricity transformed factories, offices, homes, communications, and cities. Computers automated calculations, recordkeeping, inventory management, and administrative work. The Internet changed publishing, banking, retail, marketing, communications, and customer service.

Each revolution eliminated some jobs, created others, and changed many more. AI will likely follow the same pattern, but the change may happen much faster.

Why AI Is Moving So Quickly

Cars required factories, roads, fuel stations, and mass production. Electricity required power plants, transmission lines, wiring, and new equipment. Computers were initially expensive and specialized.

AI does not need to wait for society to build an entirely new delivery system. It is arriving through infrastructure we already use, including computers, smartphones, cloud platforms, business applications, and the Internet. A new AI capability can become available to millions of people through a software update or browser almost immediately.

AI also affects cognitive work directly. It can help write, summarize, classify, research, calculate, analyze, design, communicate, and produce software.

That does not mean it can perform every job independently. It means that many tasks previously performed only by people can now be completed with technological assistance. Research from the International Labour Organization suggests that job transformation is more likely than complete automation in most occupations exposed to generative AI.

Jobs Are Collections of Tasks

We often talk about jobs as though each one were a single activity. In reality, most jobs contain many different tasks.

  • A bookkeeper may categorize transactions, investigate discrepancies, communicate with clients, prepare reports, and exercise judgment about unusual activity.
  • A medical professional may review records, document visits, explain treatment options, notice warning signs, and reassure frightened patients.
  • An IT technician may research an error, run diagnostic tests, communicate with users, evaluate security risks, and decide which solution is appropriate.

AI can perform or accelerate some of these tasks without replacing the entire profession.

The bookkeeper may spend less time manually categorizing transactions and more time reviewing exceptions. The medical professional may spend less time preparing routine documentation and more time caring for patients. The technician may diagnose common problems more quickly but remain responsible for verifying the solution and protecting the client. The job survives, but the job description changes.

AI Will Also Create Work

Technological revolutions do not only eliminate work. They create work that previously did not exist.

“Prompt engineer” has become one of the best-known examples. I am not convinced that it will remain a standalone profession for long. I think that prompt engineering will become a skill used within many existing jobs. Employees will need to know how to give AI useful instructions, provide the right context, verify its answers, detect mistakes, protect confidential information, and improve the resulting work.

We are also seeing growing demand for AI workflow designers, automation specialists, model evaluators, governance professionals, data specialists, and cybersecurity experts. Some of these job titles may eventually disappear, but the responsibilities will remain.

AI is also creating physical work.

It depends on data centers, servers, networking equipment, electrical power, cooling systems, backup generators, fiber connections, security systems, and continuous maintenance.

That creates demand for electricians, engineers, HVAC technicians, construction workers, network specialists, equipment manufacturers, cybersecurity professionals, and skilled maintenance teams.

Just as the automobile created an economy extending far beyond drivers and car factories, AI will create an economy extending far beyond software developers.

Human Skills May Become More Valuable

Professions built around trust, empathy, leadership, caregiving, and personal relationships are also likely to change, but they may be more difficult to replace.

AI can produce language that sounds compassionate. It can help a doctor review records, assist a social worker with case notes, or help a teacher prepare educational material. However, simulated empathy is not the same as a trusted human relationship.

  • A patient may need someone who understands fear, family circumstances, cultural differences, and the consequences of a difficult diagnosis.
  • A social worker must build trust and recognize concerns that may never appear in a database.
  • A manager must motivate people, resolve conflict, and accept responsibility for decisions.

AI may handle more of the administrative burden surrounding these professions. That could make the human portion of the work even more important.

A nurse who spends less time entering information may have more time to care for patients. A social worker who can reduce routine documentation may have more time to listen and advocate.

What Small Organizations Should Do Now

Small organizations should not wait for the labor market to settle before preparing. Business owners should identify which tasks are repetitive, time-consuming, and suitable for responsible automation. They should also determine where human judgment, accountability, confidentiality, and personal interaction must remain central. Employees need training, not just access to an AI application. They must learn how to question the output, verify important information, recognize security risks, and understand when AI should not be used.

Organizations should redesign jobs around the results they need rather than protecting every task simply because it has “always been done this way.”

They will understand which tasks belong with technology, which responsibilities require people, and how to help employees adapt.
