If your team uses Microsoft Authenticator as a password manager and autofill tool on mobile devices, there’s a crucial change coming:

  • Starting June 1, 2025, you won’t be able to save new passwords in the app.
  • In July 2025, autofill features will stop working, and any payment information stored will be deleted.
  • By August 1, 2025, all saved passwords will become inaccessible within Authenticator.

Microsoft is migrating its autofill and credential management features from Authenticator to Microsoft Edge, consolidating tools in one browser. Meanwhile, passkeys and MFA (two-factor authentication) will remain supported in Authenticator.

Why this matters for your business

  • Risk of data loss or disruption
Teams relying on Authenticator for autofill risk losing access to credentials and stored payment info if no action is taken before July/August.
  • Security and compliance concerns
Losing access to stored credentials can impact incident response, forensic investigation, and overall access governance. Storing and managing passwords securely is critical for compliance frameworks like PCI and HIPAA.
  • User friction and workflow disruption
Rapid changes affect productivity—password autofill suddenly stops, requiring manual entry or switching tools mid-project.

Given these changes, it’s vital to implement a structured migration plan.

Immediate action checklist

  • Identify affected users: Those storing passwords/payment info in Authenticator.
  • Export credentials before July: Use the Export Passwords feature (Settings → Autofill → Export).
  • Select a new password manager: Either:
    • Microsoft Edge Autofill (integrated, free, works within Microsoft ecosystem), or
    • Third-party options like Bitwarden, 1Password, or iCloud Keychain.
  • Import credentials to the new manager: Import the CSV or set Edge as the default autofill provider in system settings.
  • Re-enter payment details manually: Payment info won’t transfer automatically.
  • Train employees: Explain changes, walk through exporting/importing, and introduce passkeys as a more secure, phishing-resistant alternative.

Best practices for a smooth transition

  1. Audit apps and workflows using Authenticator for autofill
  2. Update documentation and compliance policies to reflect new credential storage
  3. Roll out communication materials (emails, intranet posts) explaining timeline and procedures
  4. Offer hands-on support – CDML can conduct webinars or 1:1 sessions
  5. Encourage the shift to passkeys and passwordless login where possible
