PSA: CrowdStrike Software Update Defect on 7/19/2024
What Happened?
On July 19, 2024, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike identified a defect in one of its software updates. This defect has caused Windows operating systems, including many infrastructure servers, to experience Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors. CrowdStrike has confirmed that this is not a security incident but a software malfunction. The incident has affected both Microsoft and AWS infrastructures.
Impact on Your Business
CDML Computer Services does not use or sell CrowdStrike solutions, so our customers should not be directly impacted by this defect. However, some of the cloud services that you use to run your businesses might be down as a result of this incident. During this period, you may notice:
- Intermittent access issues with cloud-based applications and services
- Potential downtime of certain infrastructure servers
Current Recommendations
While CrowdStrike and Microsoft are working to resolve the issue, Microsoft has suggested the following courses of action (https://azure.status.microsoft/en-gb/status):
- Disable CrowdStrike Software: If you are using any CrowdStrike solutions, temporarily disable them to prevent further BSOD errors.
- Reboot Affected Computers: Reboot any affected computers and servers to restore normal functionality.
